Unix Accounts

Your Unix Account

The BII corporate servers run Sun Solaris. All backend services run here. Each BII staff or student is issued one and exactly one unix account on the BII corporate servers. You are ultimately responsible for your own account. If you are unfamiliar with Unix, there are many freely available tutorials on the Internet. Please do not share accounts and do change your passwords often. The following facilities are tied to your unix account :

  • You may login to ssh.bii.a-star.edu.sg from anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.
  • Your home directory has a quota of 3GB. Throughout this documentation it is refered to as $HOME.
  • You may host your own webpages in a directory $HOME/public_html by creating a file index.html.
  • Files may be transfered in and out of your account using SCP, FTP or via AFS.
  • Account Deactivation

Accounts will be deactivated on the last official working day for staff or students. Users are expected to copy out their private files before the account is deactivated. Please note that the files in your home directory will be deleted after you leave. Any processes or scheduled jobs you have left behind will also be terminated. BII will forward your Email to an address of your choice for a period of 1 month after you leave.

BII reserves the right to deactivate accounts without notice under the following conditions :

  • The IT systems team has reason to believe your account has been compromised.
  • You have been using your account for unethical or illegal activities.
  • The manner in which you use your account poses a threat to the security or good reputation of BII or other users.
